Gordon's Stop Light - To say Gordon's Stoplight Drive-In is a Jefferson County favorite would be an understatement. A landmark is more like it. The old-fashioned restaurant that calls Crystal City home is more than your average greasy spoon. Since 1948, the restaurant is known for its thin Smashburger made on an open grill and handmade real shakes with double ice cream, served on the side. In fact, the burgers are so tasty that the Travel Channel named them the best in the state.

Gordon Haddell owned the restaurant for nearly fifty years before selling it to Lori and Kurt Gross in 1997. Lori was Gordon's neighbor. Chris Gross, Lor and Kurt's son, is also a co-owner. Gordon taught them everything he knew to run a successful business.

"He said, 'Stick with what works and you'll be successful,'" Chris says. “We added chicken and bacon sandwiches to the menu. This is all I have done in twenty-three years. If we change anything around here, people will be upset."

The restaurant has many dishes on the menu, but the jumbo burger with house salad, chopped onions and barbecue sauce on a toasted bun is a crowd favorite. "We sell 25 to 50 jumbos a day," Chris says. If you want something a little more filling, you can stack the burgers four patties high to make a giant Quadzilla. The chili is made fresh every day and tastes great on a Coney Island dog. Breakfast is served from 10:30 Monday to Saturday.

Located in Gordon's Stoplight Drive, south of St. Peter's. Louis, boasts a simple but delicious menu that includes skinny burgers, crispy fries, house-made chili, hand-rolled shakes and more classic fare.

The classic counter with swivel chairs seats up to twenty people, and you can find a few pop-up picnic tables outside during the summer. Most people don't mind waiting for a seat at the counter. After all, most people travel just to enjoy one of those bad burgers. Crystal City, a town of less than five thousand people, is about thirty-five minutes south of St. Peter's. Lois.

"We have customers from all over the country," says Chris. “We have people who regularly drive from St Peters. Louis, St. Charles and Cap [Girardeau].

The Gross family opened another restaurant within walking distance of the stoplight. Gordon's Cheese Steaks was founded in 2017 and brings Philadelphia delicacies to the Show-Me State. "We're trying to give our regulars more options," says Chris. While support for the new location continues, Stoplight still remains a local favorite thanks to its impressive menu and a la carte dining.

The Police Killing Of Maurice Gordon During A New Jersey Traffic Stop, Explained

Gordon's has been serving the best hamburgers in the world since 1948, it rightly says so on the menu. It is a very long time to keep such a record.

It's just around the corner, you can't miss it. It's a restaurant, like an old-fashioned diner with only counter seats and the grill and fryer in front of you. When I arrived there was only one other customer, so I had a run for the joint. It's not a ready-made food stack, it's a place to order.

The menu is on the right wall above the grill. Not a lot of variety, but variety isn't why you come to this place. It's a local burger, not a fancy burger, just a plain American burger. They also have chili. Mostly though it's about the burger.

A third of the staff came to us. A woman in her twenties, with confident eyes and like two friends, wearing a Gordon's T-shirt. You can buy one for yourself there, a t-shirt, not a t-shirt. I actually assumed it, not asked.

Finally, I realized that even though I had answered the question that was put to me, she was waiting for more information. Why can't people say what they want to say?

Adam broke the tension in the building by saying "Pepsi thanks". He didn't make that phrase up, it's actually a tagline from old Pepsi ads and commercials, some things just stick with you.

He looked at me and I said "tea please". Which isn't a tag from an old ad, but maybe it should be. Simple, memorable, charming. Maybe I should give this advice to the advertising people on Big Tea.

I answered that question exactly as I had answered the previous question, "Yes." Although this time seems enough.

It didn't take long, I knew the burger was thin so a double would be in order. Cheese, yes, cheese. And onion rings, which are battered and stuffed onion rings.

When he came back with our drinks he looked at us and gave us a thumbs up. I wanted to tell her that I was married in case she got the wrong idea. Two boys in love looking for action, it happens a lot when Adam and I are alone. Instead, he asked us if we were ready. I said yes.” Again, his mood darkened, I could see it on his face. Once again, Adam walks in and calls out his order, a double jumbo, no onions. A jumbo burger comes topped with lettuce slaw and barbecue sauce. He also asked for vegetables.

Rather than get into a nasty verbal argument, I just told him what I wanted. A double, with cheese and onion rings. He asked me if I wanted anything else on it. I said yes. Adam cleared his throat like his mother does when they are about to embarrass him. So I accepted and asked him the question. "What are my options?"

Lettuce, grilled onion, tomato and mayonnaise. I laughed at the mayonnaise option because it's not Canada, it's America.

I saw the cooking staff, two young men, attacking the order with a practiced profession. The grill master had just removed his hot top and the head fryer dropped a handful of rings into the fry basket. When the fryer is done and the grilled meatballs are cooked and ready, the fry guy assembles the buns and toppings on the ceramic plates. The young woman took care of many trips. There is a side window for those too shy or too scantily clad to go through the front door.

I looked around and saw the ATM. One of those third-party machines that charges an arm and a leg. Gordon does not carry plastic. We knew this and were prepared, stopping on the way.

The grill makes quick work of the burgers, they're thin and hand-packed, giving them a hard, tough look. You won't get a perfectly pressed, perfectly round burger here. I like it better that way.

Soon the lady brought our table. He asked if we wanted anything else. Adam said "No thanks" before I could answer.

A Great Burger With A Side Of Nostalgia

Everything was quiet. The three groups went to the far side of the street and started talking among themselves. There are currently no open orders, they have taken a break. Adam and I ate. I tried some of his fries, nice and thick and crispy. My onions scream
